Why would back brakes on a 1996 olds cutlass ciera sound like they are grinding when pads and rotors are ok?

A few things come to mind:
- Contaminants such as sand, dust, etc. may be present, especially in drum brakes, but could be lodged in disc brake pads also.
- Failing wheel bearings, or CV joints (if applicable), are a distinct possibility; Brake application could be stressing bad bearings in such a way as to produce grinding noise that may not be heard under normal driving conditions (yet).
- Another possibility is that the front brakes are the culprit (I can't tell from the question if they have or haven't been checked). It can be difficult, sometimes to pinpoint some sounds to a specific location.
- A dust cover, or some other thing, rubbing on the rotor while the brakes are applied.
