Most of the time it's because they're bored, and it's a well known way to release stress without hurting those you know/love. Here are some other reasons:

Reason 1: You may have posted a hurtful message on the internet earlier that hurt them.

Reason 2: They may be joking but unaware that it's bothering you.

Reason 3: They may like you and are trying to get your attention

Reason 4: They may be bullies who target weaker and younger people.

Reason 5: They want something to do and they think they have an issue with you.

Some people do it not just for your attention, but for attention period. Immature people feel that the Internet is an easy way to say whatever they want to others without any consequences. Insults can be thrown around and no one can tell them to stop. Here's what I said to someone who insulted me:

"I don't appreciate being called a "moron". You are very well inclined to disagree with my answer, but please do so in the future in a more respectable and appropriate manner. I know this is the Internet, and insults can be thrown around easily with no regard to consequences. However, it would be more becoming of you as an individual to recant such statements and allow for a healthy enlightenment on both sides. You obviously like history, and wish to correct any errors and misunderstandings on those who don't pay attention to the facts, and you have my compliments on that, but please...consider the point that you may well be wrong, and perhaps instead of calling a person a "retard or moron", you should politely inquire where they learned such a fact..."

Now my response initially had an irritated tone to it, so I said this: "If you feel that my response to your answer sounds a bit angry, well, how would you have reacted?" I will change it, as I feel that responding to insults with anger is not the way to go. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "always remain cool and collected". No hard feelings my friend.

You see? That's how I deal with cyberbullies. You have to take the high ground and no matter how angry you are, don't insult them back to yell back because that's what they want you to do. Just give a mature and intelligent response, and you'll just leave them completely frustrated. They are just pathetic and speak out their insecurities to you so they could feel good about themselves. They are obviously too much of a coward to say it to your face, so they post it online because they are too afraid and insecure to actually tell you.

Don't listen to them. You are fine. They just don't have a life! Don't worry.

What is the definition of an inflammatory comment?

An Inflammatory comment is a subjective opinion about someone's statement. It assumes that a person knows the reason for a comment and that the purpose of the comment is only to arouse anger or emotion in those who hear the comment. As such the term says more about the person using the term than to the actual comment. It would be wise to stricken the term from use since most people cannot read the minds of other people.
