Especially in the 4th and 5th centuries CE (or, AD), various "barbarian" tribes moved into the Roman Empire in search of material riches and even new lands in which to settle. A number of these tribes had been pushed out of their original home-lands by equally aggressive tribes from farther north or east; some of them were simply attracted by the richness of Rome itself.

It was actually because they had nowhere else to go. The Huns came in from the east and forced many barbarian tribes to move west, some of them into the roman empire itself. Some barbarian tribes immigrated into the roman empire, but the Romans didn't give them any food (the visigoths) so they started to rampage. Some barbarians were forced out of their homes, and had to migrate to other places (Saxons).

Barbarian peoples traded with the Romans because they lived near the borders of the Roman Empire and took up the trading opportunities offered by Roman traders. Not only that, as a result of this, some of these peoples became romanised. Some Roman traders also travelled deep into a part of Germany which was along the trade amber route to Poland, deeper than anywhere else. There were romanised trading settlements along this route deep into Germany and some of its inhabitants were half Roman.

There was a movement of peoples westward from Asia. Each was followed by a fiercer people, so the westward pressure continued and intensified as the Romans tried to absorb them.

Why was the Roman Empire hard to defend?

It was actually not that easy to defend the empire as the barbarians (Barbarians is not a specific type of empire, it is just a Roman term for any-one not of Roman stature) would often attack the empire, but what would make it a little bit easy to defend is that the Roman empire had MASSIVE armies. Each army consited of a couple legions, each legion about a thousand soldiers.
