Why would the check engine light on a 1998 VW Jetta intermittenly go on for a day and then off and sometimes blink on and off for a minute but a scan for problem codes shows none?

first of all,you should check conections to your car's computer.sometimes it gets something on and it shows you wrong information.you should take the connection out and clean it with the knife careful.
AnswerI also have a 98 Jetta that the check engine light goes on and off. Sometimes it stays on for a day, some times a month then will stay off for as long as six months. Volkswagen told me it's a sensor located in the front right fender that senses fuel fumes from the gas tank to a recirculation valve on the engine. They said it's a $30 part that will cost $300 in labor to get to. Volkswagen recommended I not worry about unless I had the $330 dollars to throw away. They said it has no effect on the performance of the vehicle and all other critical systems have independent warning lights. Hope that helps.My light has been comming on and off since 98. Oil and coolant good? Don't worry about it. Something as simple as your Gas cap not being tight enough can make that thing come on LolWiki User
