Why would the coolant temperature rise to 280 degrees on a 1996 Jetta GLX VR6 and then when you pull over drop back to a normal temperature of 200 degrees?

Try checking the cooling fan sensor to ensure it engages the fan. The fans should be turning very fast

Hello, I have been trying to track this down as well, seeing as how i dont have a manual for my Jetta. I belive this light either indicates low temperature of the coolant or low level of the coolant. I hopefully will be able to find a whole list of what all these lights mean at some point in time. If i can find it i will returen and post.
