Why would the dashboard of your 92 Ford Taurus only light up when you turn the interior lights on?

On our '92 Sable wagon, the roller dimmer switch was bad. It was like $75 for the part and $50 to install. Three months later, the head gasket blew. I shoulda lived with it!
