The car has 2 sensors, 1 for the gauge and one for the computer. The one for the computer has 2 wires, and the one for the gauge has one, change them. __> The thermostat could also be faulty, and will cause the gauge to not read. When that happens, the PCM senses the fault and kicks the fans in as a safety measure. You will most likely need a hew thermostat. Answer I would start with the coolant temperature sensor and see if that fixes it. I agree that the thermostat could be faulty and that is also a cheap fix, but I don't think that would cause the gauge not to read. If it was faulty, your car would overheat or not raise to operating temperature. Answer I am having the same problem with my 2001 Monte Carlo SS. At first I replaced the thermostat with one from Autozone...that fixed the problem temporarily then the same things occured (temp gauge not working and fan stays on)...then I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor from Autozone...and that worked for about a week and the same problems came back...I finally took my car to get a diagnostic at the local Chevy dealership and they said that the harness for my Coolant Temp Sensor was shorted out and needed to be replaced and they said that the thermostat that I would need to replace the Autozone thermostat with a GM thermostat b/c they are seeing a lot of problems with the aftermarket thermostats on these cars...I am going to buy the thermostat today, so wish me good luck.
