Why would the oil dash light in a 1970 Beetle not turn on when the key is in the start position it comes on won't start and when you try it again the light won't go on?

check the connecter on the oil switch located on the left hand side of the engine just under the distibuter, then the connecter on the speedo if ok take out the bulb and test to see if ok.
