Why would you have an intermittent antifreeze smell in a '99 Tacoma?
waterpumps leak on these quite often. that's the first place i would check. if you don't see any signs of coolant leaks from that area (check just below and to the left of the thermostat housing) have the system pressure tested. i believe also that head gaskets leak on these (V-6 models) check for a trail of dry coolant starting above the stat housing at the seam between the head and the block.
The smell of antifreeze is very strong and distinct, it does not take much of a leak to smell it. The radiator could still be full and have a small leak. I would check for antifreeze dripping onto the exhaust or on the engine block because when it is hot the smell is much more noticeable from the fumes.
If my 97 expedition is leaking coolant - how would I know. I am getting the antifreeze smell out the AC vents but can see no drips or liguid in the cab. Would the degas bottle be empty or not full.?
if you can smell antifreeze, you have an antifreeze leak somewhere. you need to clean engine then look for coolant . it will generally pool on ground under vehicle unless it is leaking onto engine and burning off. note that the coolant will run so you may have to trace back to the actual leak. check all coolant fittings, such as hoses and check area round water pump.
Normal it means your leaking antifreeze from somewhere. Check your levels and look on the ground, some times the vent system can pull in the smell. Check the hoses. Also it can be a leak in the heater core. If so it can be exspensive to replace, mostly because the whole dash normally needs to come out to get to it.
Why would a 1998 Jeep Wrangler have a rust colored antifreeze continuing after a flush and a burning smell coming through the air vents?
Many people associate the smell of antifreeze with an overheated engine. The only reason we do that is because we certainly smell antifreeze when the engine is overheated and blowing out antifreeze, but if there is just a slow leak of antifreeze and we smell that, we MIGHT be able to convince ourselves that the engine is overheated. Check for coolant leaks around the engine, radiator and heater hoses. After cooling down and drying out…
Your car shouldn't "burn" antifreeze. If it actually is "burning" antifreeze then chances are you have a blown/leaking head gasket or possibly a cracked engine block which allows antifreeze to enter the combustion chambers. If your antifreeze is just disappearing then it is probably leaking out from somewhere. Possible leak areas to check out would be the radiator hoses, heater hoses, radiator, water pump, and the heater core. Most of the time if the heater…
The heater core is cracked. You may also be smelling a sweet sort of smell when you turn on the heat and the car is running hot. That sweet smell comes from the anitfreeze when it burns. I have a 1998 ford Expedition and I smell antifreeze inside the truck. also antifreeze leaking around the passenger side of motor outside..... I can see a mist coming out of the ac vents.... could it be bad…
Why would a Chemical smell be coming from ac vents after evaporator and expansion valve replaced in 1992 acura legend?
Changing ac components under the hood should not cause a chemical smell. If the smell changes by changing the air settings from recirculate to fresh, then there may be some chemicals on the outside of the parts. It is also possible that you damaged a part of the heater core system and the smell is antifreeze.
I had a 2000 Lincoln LS and the Antifreeze Reservoir had a rash of heat induced cracks on the side facing the Firewall. The antifreeze would ooze and evaporate without leaving a puddle but a whiff of the smell could be noticed on some occasions. My 2005 LS has some of the same cracks but has not started to leak or ooze antifreeze. Also on my 2005 LS there was an upper hose leak but…
Why is there a gas smell under the hood of my Tacoma after having the head gasket replaced The mechanic said it was because the exhaust manifold is cracked but there is a smell of gas not exhaust?
it is most likely the brake calipers sticking, as I recently had this problem on my 2007 dodge grand caravan. They did not do it all the time, but would stick out for a brief period of time after braking, thus causing the burning smell, and then shortly after retract far enough so that there was no longer cantact, and therefore, the burning smell then went away.
My 99 2.4 tacoma 2wd quit I tried to restart it and the battery lights and starter worked fine but wouldn't fire up I had it towed to the Toyota dealer and it ran fine the next day any suggestions?
Your heater core could be leaking, but that would smell like antifreeze. You could have had a windshield replaced by a moron, or you could have had body panels replaced by the same moron. Unfortunately you need to stick your nose in there and see if it smells like antifreeze, coz that's bad news Phil
If a 1998 Cavalier is making a noise almost like a knife being sharped by a sand belt and you smell something like maple syrup at lower speeds could it be your transmission or a converter?
I would guess that this is most probably the transmission. The maples smell is the transmission fluid. It has a sweet smell. The grinding could be that the gears are off. When was the last time the timing belt was changed? I'd get it into a tranny shop and have them take alook as well. I don't recommend changing or adding more tranny fluid till then. You make make the situation worse. Answer Syrupy smell…
If you are smelling the sweet but unpleasant aroma of antifreeze, your vehicle is leaking it somewhere. A lot of the time the culprit is the water pump. They have a weep hole and when the bearing starts to fail it will begging leaking from this hole. I would start by getting myself a flashlight and start scanning your engine's water hoses for a leak. Check the mail hoses going to/from the radiator as well…
I had an intermittent problem with my LS, where all of the sudden, the temp would sky rocket and the on board computer would reduce engine power. It happened three time and each time, I pulled over, shut the car off for about ten minutes then started on my way again, with no problem. Finally, I bought pre-mixed antifreeze/coolant and filled the reservoir to the top. Have not had a problem since.
