waterpumps leak on these quite often. that's the first place i would check. if you don't see any signs of coolant leaks from that area (check just below and to the left of the thermostat housing) have the system pressure tested. i believe also that head gaskets leak on these (V-6 models) check for a trail of dry coolant starting above the stat housing at the seam between the head and the block.

Low antifreeze might cause an intermittent chemical smell from the A/C on the recirculate mode. The recirculate mode is a feature of some diesel engines so that all of the air cleaners can get blown out. Perhaps the dirt is causing the chemical smell.

The smell of antifreeze is very strong and distinct, it does not take much of a leak to smell it. The radiator could still be full and have a small leak. I would check for antifreeze dripping onto the exhaust or on the engine block because when it is hot the smell is much more noticeable from the fumes.
