waterpumps leak on these quite often. that's the first place i would check. if you don't see any signs of coolant leaks from that area (check just below and to the left of the thermostat housing) have the system pressure tested. i believe also that head gaskets leak on these (V-6 models) check for a trail of dry coolant starting above the stat housing at the seam between the head and the block.
Answeralso I know on chevrolets atleast the ones I have owned you might want to check your heater coil it is probbly under your dash board near your glove box just something else to checkLow antifreeze might cause an intermittent chemical smell from the A/C on the recirculate mode. The recirculate mode is a feature of some diesel engines so that all of the air cleaners can get blown out. Perhaps the dirt is causing the chemical smell.
You probably used the wrong type of antifreeze. You should use the type for aluminum heads.
The smell of antifreeze is very strong and distinct, it does not take much of a leak to smell it. The radiator could still be full and have a small leak. I would check for antifreeze dripping onto the exhaust or on the engine block because when it is hot the smell is much more noticeable from the fumes.
If you smell antifreeze, there must be a leak somewhere. Have the cooling system pressure tested.
It probably has a leak, possibly from the heater core.
Probably - your head gasket is blown. Antifreeze will be coming out of the tail (exhaust) pipe.
Most of the time it is caused by a hole in the heater core, do you smell a sweet smell? The sweet smell would be the antifreeze.
The "antifreeze smell out the AC vents" would mean only one thing, you have a small leak in the heater core.
Only reason would be that the heater core is leaking.
heater core possibly plugged and leaking
Blown Heater Core - The heater fan blows past the heater core and if it has a hole in it your antifreeze ios being blown onto your windshield.
Your car will not neccessarily smell like Antifreeze if your water pump is going, in my personal experience it sounds like your HEATER CORE is shot. That is what usually makes that smell, unless you spilled some on the engine. Also, if the water pump was going the car would run hot and/or overheat.
