Will a 3800 engine fit and work properly in my 2000 grand prix 3100 model if not does anyone know why my engine ticks when i start it and let it idleit will stop once i drive it but ticks when cold?

It ticks because the oil has not pressurized the lifters and taken the slack out of the valve system. Try a heavier oil grade and more frequent oil changes. Lucas oil stabilizer is excellent for this also, the oil will be less apt to flow down to the pan from inside the lifters between starts.
