Remove crankcase ventilation valve(black plastic 90 degree elbow) from valve cover and intake manifold. remove the fiev nuts on th top o the valve cover. place a pry bar between cylinder head and valve cover at the corners where they have left a gap. Pry slowly and easily. be sure to work all corners not just one.

The front top valve cover has 2 pieces (main cover and pcv cover). The PCV is located under the small cover (has a 6 inch hose attached to it) on top of the front valve cover . If you look at the front valve cover, you'll see four (4) bolts. The two outer bolts fasten the valve cover to the cylinder head. The two inner bolts hold the PCV cover to the valve cover. To gain access to the PCV valve, you remove the two inner bolts and remove the PCV cover, leaving the valve cover fastened to the cylinder head. It might take some "persuasion" to get the cover off. Once you have the PCV valve cover off the valve cover, there will be a large square seal (looks like a big o-ring) that seals the perimeter of the PCV cover. There will also be two o-rings that seal the PCV cover bolt bosses to the valve cover. The PCV valve is located on the right side of the opening. You can't miss. Just unscrew it and spray some WD40 on it and work it around. Pick up another PCV cover o-ring and the two o-rings located underneath the cover bolts (3 seals total) at the dealer or parts store. They're probably hard as stones by now.

you need access to all the boltz holding the cover on. any obstruction that wont allow you to get s socket wrench on the bolts. sometime you can get it off when the air flow hose ect... anything that might be mounted above the valve cover. so, remove the boltz first. get them secure some where so you don't loose any. ten try to pop the valve cover lifted off. sometimes the are stubborn and the natural response is the pry harder. all your going to do is bend the valve cover and then not have a valve cover that most likely will leak. work around the whole edge of the valve cover lifting bits of it at a time, evenly and probably by the time you pry loose about have it should come right off. the hard part is making sure you vlean the whole valve cover. SPECIALLY where the gasket goes. if you leave any but clean shiny metal you'll have a leak!!!

I started at around 8:30 and finished around 2:30 pm, it could have been earlier but performing the repair myself took some time. It involves removing the alternator, serpentine belt, spark plugs, (make sure you number the plugs) check your wires for corrosion, so that you replace them as your replacing your valve cover gaskets. removing the coil rack and brakets also involved in replacing your gaskets. Called pep boys and they wanted 387.66 for the repair. NO they will not work. You MUST use a high rail head where the valve cover bolts are in the center of the head. 1988 to 1999 will work.

check the pcv valve ( positive crankcase ventlation), first locate it, usally on the rear valve cover, with a vacume hose hooked up to it from the intake maifold. remove it from valve cover, and disconnect vacume hose. then shake the valve if you dont hear anything then the valve is bad. change it and it will solve your shutoff problem. if that doesnt work check airfilter, idle adjustment, and change fuel filter.

An oil leak there is probably a valve cover gasket leaking. it would not require head gasket replacment. Try tightning the bolts on the valve cover. If that does not work then replace the valve cover gasket. Yes it could be the head gasket as there are oil passages in the head and i have heard that head gasket on saturns are prone to failure,look around the valve cover for sings of a leak hopfully that's all it is because replacing the head gasket is costly on th 1.9 sohc
