You did not say if manual or automatic, but with the history of the 89 manuals if it is (was) a Puegoet trans, they likes to self destruct & are VERY expensive to repair and in my opinion not worth the time & money. A 2003 might fit, but the TJ (97-2006) also had a different transfer case so the lengths might be different. A good alternate replacement choice is the AX-15 from a later YJ (91-95 6 cylinder- 4 cylinder had AX-5) I forget when they started using them in the YJs, but I know these years had it. The length is sposed to be identical so an almost direct swap. You will need to match the parts between the engine/trans & the trans/Xfer case. Check out the Jeep forums & blogs for more info. I know I read somewhere that it was a fairly easy swap. The AX-15 is also very plentiful on the used market. Many Jeep salave yards have them for a reasonable cost. DAVEYSJEEPS.COM is just one that I have delt with that is good with a large selection. I have also purchased major parts (frame & tub) from Williams Restorations in Colorado Springs. Matt Wells was great to work with.
