Well, the EGR just sends some of the exhaust flow into the intake to be reburned for emissions sake. Sometimes there's a problem with the valve, or related part that causes the valve to open when idling. It should only open when you're driving. The most common symptom with an EGR problem is stalling and rough idle at stop.
