I have six pet chickens of all different breeds. My chickens will still lay on their eggs after I touch them. They don't seem to care at all.

They will hatch if touched by bare hands. We raised what is now called "free range" chickens when I was growing up on the farm. I gather my eggs by hand every day and keep select ones to place under my hens when they become broody. So every one has been handled by hand several times before setting them. Just make sure that your hands are clean and clean the eggs if they are soiled by wiping with a damp cloth and allowing to dry. Store the eggs you want to hatch with the large end up in an egg carton at room temperature.

You have not said how many chickens you have altogether. Chickens die for many reasons and not always from communicable disease. Poor nutrition, illness and predation. A hen being pecked by the others weakens them and then all they need is a minor illness to weaken them even more. Generally, I would say if the rest of the birds are acting normal and healthy then you would not have a problem eating the eggs. If they are all acting sick, then you may want to leave off consuming the eggs until you figure out why they are ill.

You are not eating baby chickens when you eat eggs! You can even feed your chicken...chicken!

Because by the time it got to you, it could have been around for months, and it was poor quality to begin with thanks to the conditions the chickens are kept. If you want long-lasting eggs, go to the smallest farm you can and see if you can drop by once a week to buy fresh eggs from them. I keep chickens and their eggs are still good a month after we collect them.
