Depends upon the type of hyena:

  • The largest, the spotted hyena, also known as the laughing hyena, hunts and kills up to 95% of its food. The remainder is scavenged, but it is first and foremost a hunting predator. It hunts in packs at night, which enables it to bring down prey much larger than itself. Preferred prey are wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. It has been known on occasion to bring down prey as large as a giraffe, elephant, and cape buffalo. In fact, its only competition for apex predator in those areas where it hunts is the lion, and if hunting success rate is the sole or most important criterion for apex predator is % of successful hunts, the spotted hyena wins with a 50% and greater success rate, while the lion succeeds only on 30% of its hunnts.
  • The two next largest, the striped hyena and brown hyena are both scavengers that hunt on occasionally.
  • Last and smallest is the aardwolf, a highly specialized predator. Its diet consists almost entirely of harvester termiites.

Will hyenas hunt live prey?

Yes, they do go in groups to take down their own prey. Individually they kill offspring too.

Is hyena a scavenger?

No, hyenas hunt their own prey just like how wolves do. They are not scavengers or wimps. What people seem to ignore is- why would an animal have such strong jaws and be a scavenger? In fact, lions steal hyenas' kills alot more than hyenas do.

How do spotted hyenas protect themselves?

Hyenas are scavengers, they do not hunt and capture their own prey but wait round for some predator to kill something and they then come and eat the leftovers. Wrong, Hyenas kill 70-95% of their prey and are more successful hunters than Lions. Hyenas may kill small prey like rodents by breaking the prey's spine. But when hunting large prey, they rip off cunks of meat the prey to bring out it's weakness: the intestines.

Why do hyenas not kill their own prey?

It is a much believed myth that hyenas do not hunt and kill their own prey. They are also very opertunistic scavengers and it is always easier to just take what you need than to go out and earn it yourself. All animals in nature try to conserve energy.

Can hyenas hunt live prey?

A group of Hyenas are quite capable of hunting their own food prey, though will scavenge a lion's kill if given the chance. If enough hyenas arrive at a lesser number of lions at their kill, the hyenas have been known to drive the lions off their kill for themselves.

Are Hyenas primary consumer?

No, hyenas are not primary consumers; they are considered carnivores and primarily act as scavengers and predators in their ecosystems. They primarily feed on the remains of dead animals or hunt for live prey, placing them higher in the food chain. Primary consumers, on the other hand, are typically herbivores that feed on plants and algae.
