Usually, once the alcohol withdrawal is adequately treated with medicines, the seizures, if they indeed are secondary to withdrawal, typically do not recur. If the seizures continue after alcohol withdrawal has been adequately treated, then other causes of seizures are sought with other tests.

The fortunate thing is that, yes, they will stop, but how they stop is the critical question. If they are not too severe, they will stop on their own once the brain chemistry readjusts itself into an alcohol free state. The unfortunate thing is that if they are severe enough, they can cause death. That will make them stop, but the person will have lost their life. That is why Alcoholism is considered a disease and getting sober is best done in a medical facility where they can administer drugs to help the person go through withdrawals more safely.

On a more philosophical note, as long as we have alcohol available, either legal or illegal, there will be alcoholics. And with that, there will be alcoholics that eventually choose sobriety, and so the answer may be that as long as that is the case, seizures from alcohol will never stop, or at least in the populace.

What causes alcoholics to die from seizures?

Alcoholism can affect many areas of the body such as the brain, heart, liver and kidneys. Sudden withdrawal from alcohol regarding true alcoholics is the cause of seizures. Alcohol withdrawal differs significantly from most other drugs because it can be directly fatal. An alcoholic can die from the direct effects of withdrawal if it is not properly managed. Heavy consumption of alcohol reduces the production of GABA, which is a neuroinhibitor. An abrupt stop of alcohol consumption can induce a condition where neither alcohol nor GABA exists in the system in adequate quantities, causing uncontrolled firing of the synapses. This manifests as hallucinations, shakes, convulsions, seizures, and possible heart failure, all of which are collectively referred to as delirium tremens. All of these withdrawal issues can be safely controlled with a medically supervised detox.

If you drink a lot of alcohol and then just stop what are the health risk?

Alcohol withdrawal without medical help will result in some or all of the following: extreme anxiety, disorientation, hallucinations, sleep disorders, hand tremors, nausea, sweating, seizures, blood pressure spikes, and racing pulse. Delirium tremens (DTs -- physical and visual hallucinations accompanied by terror reactions) may be present. In the worst cases, untreated alcohol withdrawal syndrome can result in death related to high blood pressure (stroke) and seizures.

After frequent high dose use which is more dangerous alcohol withdrawal or heroin withdrawal?

Alcohol withdrawal can lead to DT's (electrolyte imbalance) and seizures which can both lead to death. Heroin withdrawal may make a person feel like they are dying; the biggest danger is dehydration, which if left untreated can lead to serious health problems. Severe alcohol withdrawal should be completed in a hospital whereas heroin withdrawal does not necessarily require hospitalization. Severe alcohol withdrawal is more dangerous.

How do you stop alcohol?

You can take steps today to stop drinking. Your first step might be to see your doctor, contact a support group, or set a date in the near future to stop. While some people can stop drinking on their own, others need medical help to manage the physical process of withdrawal. If you think you have an addiction to alcohol, talk to your doctor about whether you need to withdraw from alcohol under medical supervision. Your doctor can give you medicine that will help you safely withdraw from alcohol. Other medicines might be prescribed later to help you stay sober. With a doctor's help, withdrawal from alcohol is safer.

Should people that stop drinking go see a doctor?

Withdrawal from alcohol involves a risk of blood pressure spikes that, combined with vascular damage from alcohol and other sources, could cause strokes. There is an additional risk of both seizures and psychotic episodes. For those reasons, detox should always be medically monitored, preferably in an inpatient setting where medication can be given to ameliorate much of the danger and discomfort.

What is the most common symptom of alcoholism?

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occurs in alcohol-dependent individuals who suddenly stop or dramatically reduce their alcohol intake. The onset of the syndrome is likely to occur within a week, but usually occurs within 24 hours of the individual's last drink, and is triggered when the central nervous system attempts to adjust to the sudden absence of ethyl alcohol in the body. Symptoms may include extreme anxiety, disorientation, hallucinations, sleep disorders, hand tremors, nausea, sweating, seizures, and racing pulse. Delirium tremens (DTs) are an extreme example of withdrawal. In the worst cases, untreated alcohol withdrawal syndrome can result in death.
