Answerthat it very common in this kind of car, it is usually the lifters. but i was told by a mechanic one time that all maximas make the same noise. At oil change time, use an engine oil additive such as Rislone according to the instructions on the Rislone bottle. Cured my 95 Maxima of the noise you describe. I've got 2 other older Maximas (beside the one I cured) and neither of those make any such noise.
