If your brake lights are not working, and you get stopped you may get just a warning, but more likely a "Fix-It" ticket, Brake lights are a very important safety feature. You will have however many days the law says in your State to get them fixed, then you must take it to the Highway Patrol Station, local Police station, or any cop that will sign off on it, then take that to the court to prove they are repaired. There is usually no fine if you do it in time.
