First of all, there are two (2) v6 engines, that being the 2.8L and the 4.3L. Both have different wire orders. Take a piece of paper and draw two rectangles on it (this is the shape of the engine looking down on it), next mark FRONT on the bottom of the rectangle (do this for both). Next draw a small circle on the other end of the rectangle and draw a smaller circle inside the larger circle (Do this for both also, this will represent the distributor). Using one rectangle (this will be for the 2.8L motor), on the left side mark (front to back) the numbers 1, 3, 5. Now do the same on the right side but put the numbers 2, 4, 6. Now were the circle is on the rectangle, put a number "1" on the front, then going clockwise, mark number 2, then, number 3, then number 4, then number 5, last do number 6 around the circle. Draw a line connecting #1 to #1 and the same for the rest of the numbers. That is it for the 2.8L motor.
Now using the other rectangle, (this is for the 4.3L motor) mark a number 1 on the front of the circle and then going clockwise mark number 6, then number 5, then number 4, then number 3 and last number 2. On the left side of the triangle (going front to back) mark numbers 2,4,6 and on the right side (front to back) number 1,3,5. Draw lines connecting the same numbers to each other as you did for the 2.8L diagram. Now you should be able to get the wires correct on either motor. All this is based on the fact that the distributor is in the factory position.
It should be the same as the small block.18436572.
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise on cap.

Clockwise.
(This is from the 91 Caprice service manual for the HEI ignition system) Looking at the distributor cap from the front of the engine bay, and running clockwise around the cap from about the 1 o'clock position, the wire numbering is: 3,6,5,7,2,1,8,4
the same as an old points distributer right front #1_8_4_3_6_5_7_2 the center wire is just like a coil (and is) a coil
Timing chain jumped? distributor cap is cracked or igniition wire are mix up

We need to know what engine it has.
