All members of the nobility below kings were vassals of the kings. This was not as easy an issue as it might appear. Some nobility at lower levels were independent of any kings, and these could include princes and dukes. Furthermore some kings were vassals of other kings, as Henry II of England was technically a vassal of Louis VII of France because Henry had counties in France. The Kings of Scotland were forced to accept that they were vassals of the Kings of England at one point. There were kings who were vassals of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and some of these were had kingdoms that were partly in the empire and partly out, in which case they were vassals for the part in, but not vassals for the part out.

Every society has social norms and customs, a system of governance, and a form of communication. These elements are the foundation of the functioning of a society.
Not EVERY rule, but most of them. Hence the saying, 'the exception that proves the rule.'
It affects society in every reason
An unhandled exception is an Exception that is thrown by execution but is never caught by the program, which results in a nasty Exception Stack. This could be avoided by catching the exception in a try-catch statement, but it is not always appropriate to catch every possible exception. Sometimes the exception is the result of the client making a mistake rather than something that occurred where it is thrown, therefore the client should be informed of the exception. But most of the time it is user friendly to not propagate exceptions.
A leap year occurs every four years. The exception is that there is no leap year at the turn of the century. The exception to the exception is that there is a leap year every fourth century. The next leap year will be in 2012 (which the Mayan's predicted will be the end of the world). Also, the Olympic Games take place every fourth year, e.g. 2008 Beijing and 2010 London.
