auto transwell theres wear on the linkage from moving it more than you need to, maybe internal wear from the torque converter locking and unlocking and the manual shifting of gears. Nothing really earth shattering but definitely not necessary, the transmission is designed to be placed in drive and left there unless traction situations cause you to move it or you need to put it in reverse. I think since it was designed to operate that way that doing it your way might cause premature wear to some internal parts and linkage.

You save on gas by doing it but defenitely wear and tear on transmission.

If it's an automatic and it doesn't have a manual transfer case, you would have to remove the driveshaft(s).

Can you replace a standard transmission with an automatic transmission?

Yes it can be done, but there is really no point as it is a big job and will cost more than its worth. Plus a manual transmission is way better than a automatic. If you would rather have a automatic transmission it would be wise to just sell the vehicle that has the manual and buy a vehicle equipped with an automatic.
