I'd like to add to this question. The necklace is a men's chain necklace and it does say "14kt Italy" on the clasp. However, I scratched the clasp and the gold flaked off. The chain itself looks like gold. The clasp was quickly attracted to a magnet, however the chain was only slightly magnetic. I'm confused how this could be fake if it is stamped 14kt...
A different (stronger) metal is very commonly used for clasps in jewelry. The entire piece could be 24k gold, however, if the clasp was constructed of the same, gold is such a soft metal that it could easily break or just bend slightly enough to come loose. For this reason, either more metal is mixed with the gold to provide strength, or an entirely different metal is used and then plated to match.
Yes, just went thru the same thing. 14K Italy stamped right on the clasp...fake fake fake
Gold Plated
Most likely it is Gold shell (gold plated) But it could be a jewelers mark.
It could indicate KaraT Plated, meaning that the necklace is gold plated.
Rub it, if you can smell tarnish its not solid gold because gold doesn't rust. Its probably what it's plated to!
it depends on style of necklace and weight. also if it is gold plated or not
If any piece is Sterling, it will have a hallmark '.925' stamped deeply on it. Any pieces made since 1850 or so will most likely be plated with rhodium or ruthenium.
Gold Plated
Nickel plated
"pg" on a necklace, ring ect. stands for plated gold ; meaning the jewelry is not completely gold, its a different gold with 14k plated over it.
Zinc Plated perhaps.
Plated with 10kt gold
Hi anything with PL before or after 18 k or 9k is an indication that the item is gold plated with a thin layer of gold on top of a base metal or sometimes silver. Daniel
