Here's the deal. Many students work off campus with an F1 visa even though it's ILLEGAL! This is because the chances of getting caught aren't that great, since only the INS or DHS have the authority to investigate. However, if they DO investigate and they DO find your records, then you will be deported 99% of the time. You will have the right to contact your embassy and you will have a hearing, but that doesn't mean you won't get deported. They will cancel your visa and prevent you from entering the United States.
The consequences are great!
Working off campus without a work permit is considered a violation of the terms of your F1 student visa. It could have serious consequences, including deportation from the US. It is important to adhere to the regulations and obtain the necessary work authorization to avoid any Immigration issues.
