It is very likely. If he grabs you around the neck it will probably be to stimulate fear. If you are afraid of him, it is much easier for him to get you to obey him. You can't tell what he is thinking by his apologies, as abusers are the best manipulators.
This may not be the case...he really could have just slipped up. Unfortunately, in todays world, it generally isn't that.
