You have just bought a 2000 crown vic p71 and it shifts kinda ruff to 1st and jumps out of gear when cruising around 40-45 mph and jumps back in gear could it be the filter in the tranny?

Lets look at the simple things first. I had a 1994 Ford vic p71. WhenI replaced the filter on the transmission I didnt realize there was a round tube extension on the filter. Every time I went around a corner the transmission went out of gear. This was caused by insufficient fluid getting to the valve body. In your case I would make sure the fluid level is correct ( ONLY USE MERCON V TRANSMIISION FLUID)If that checks out, check to see if it has the appropriate filter for your car. If all else fails rebuild the transmission.
