This should be very simple. You have a belt tensioner that keeps the belt tight. You should be able to use a 1/2 drive breaker bar to hold the idler up from the belt & remove the belt. Unless the springs are broken in it. This happens on lots of fords. The tensioner sometimes will get the belt so tight it will break the face off the alternator. I doubt you have this problem. Maybe you are pushing the wrong way on your breaker bar. Hope this helps
If this is your problem you will have to have a new one
Loosen alternator remove old belt. Reroute new belt, tighten alternator.
Disconnect the battery. Loosen and remove the serpentine belt. Unscrew the bolts that hold the alternator in place and remove it. Disconnect the wires that still hold the alternator to the vehicle. Connect the new alternator to the wires and screw it back in place. Replace the serpentine belt.
Disconnect negative battery terminal. Loosen the serpentine belt - loosen the tensioner. Disconnect the alternator connections at the terminals. Slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley and pull the alternator out. Install is reverse.
Ajustment bolt is located at the bottom of power steering pump.
loosen the one or two bolts holding the alternator in place, i believe 14mm, then loosen the 12mm on the adjuster (side) and "screw" the 12mm bolt down to lower the alternator down enough and replace the belt. This is almost the same for every Toyota engine which doesnt use an automatic belt tensioner (serpentine) on the alternator.
To reach the alternator on a 2000 Honda Civic loosen the adjustment bracket. Pull the loose belt off then loosen the bolts for the alternator. Replace the alternator.
Piece of Cake!! remove serpentine belt (search here for answer how to), remove the lower of 2 bolts from the alternator, loosen the upper, rotate the alternator up, remove the bolt. Install is the reverse.
there should be a tensioner pully. Put the 3/8 ratchet in the center of it and turn.
disconnect the battery source first, disconnect the wiring on the alternator, then loosen the bolts on the mounts to loosen the belt. then loosen and remove the bolts. remove the alternator, and replace with new one.
To replace the alternator belt on a Citroen Berlingo, you have to locate the tensioner. You can loosen it to replace it.
the alternator serves as the tensioner in atleast the 2.0 engine. I had to replace my belt recently, it wasn't a very complicated matter. Loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt. Then take off the nut on the top left of the alternator. Finally loosen the bolt on the top of the alternator, (it faces you). You can then remove the bolt that runs through the alternator. This will allow you to remove the old belt and replace it.
If it is not serpentine - loosen the alternator mounting bolts and it should pivot allowing you to remove and replace If serpenting - relieve pressure on the tensioner and belt should be able to be removed
Remove the negative from the battery. Use a breaker bar or larger ratchet to turn the tensioner. This will loosen the serpentine belt for removal. Disconnect the wiring harness from the alternator, loosen and remove bolts holding the alternator then remove it. Place the new alternator in position and follow the above steps in reverse.
Also in order to loosen the serpentine belt you have to use a wrench or something and turn on the bottom pulley....easy remove the serpentine belt for the fan area and remove the two bolts that hold the alternator down and unclip the wiring harness
If it is the same 3800 engine as the 1993 Lesabre--very simple. Alternator is right on top of the engine. Loosen the serpentine belt ( tensioner) - remove the mounting bolts that hold the alternator on the bracket- remove the wire connections.

The pulley bellow the alternator is the tensioner. Rotate it with a 15mm to loosen belt.

You must first loosen the alternator, do not remove it. remove the alternator tension screws top and loosen the bottom screws DO NOT REMOVE push the alternator toward engine, for the a/c belt you must loosen the belt tension pulley and move it. replace in reverse order
Loosen the serpentine belt by removing one bolt and loosening the other on the belt tensioner located in the top middle of the belt position. Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator. Next remove the 3 bolts holding in the alternator and unplug the wiring harness attached. The alternator should now be able to come free with a little coaxing depending on its condition. Repeat in backwards order when installing a new alternator.
The alternator on a 1986 Honda Civic is located in front of the engine. Unplug the battery and remove the alternator belt. Loosen the alternator bracket and remove the plug to the alternator. Replace the unit.
the alternator will be located close to the top of the motor, you will need to loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the serpentine belt, disconnect the elictrical connections at the alternator and remove the alternator mounting bolts. then just lift the alternator out... as far as tools you will need a basic set of sockets and a screwdriver.
