You just bought a used 99 vw golf how do you know if the timing belt was changed?

if you have the service history check for the dealers stamp if not check onto of the cambelt housing to see if there is a sticker with mileage on which indicates when it was changed if none of the above take off the cambelt casing and check the condition of the cambelt and if it doesnt look new have it done for peace of mind.
