The US never made a 1 lb fine silver coin in 1888 or any other year. The highest-value circulating silver coin at the time was the famous "Morgan" silver dollar, named for its designer.
What you probably have is a modern bullion piece that uses a version of the same design, but sold to collectors and investors for its metal content. Its value would be determined by the current price of silver, about $18 / troy ounce as of 04/2010. There are about 14.6 troy ounces in a standard US pound.
I will put a value of $420.00 retail on this coin. That's the value of a Extremely Fine graded Quarter Eagle dated 1888
The U.S. did not make any dollar coins dated 1816. From your description, it's a silver round not a genuine coin. Value is about $19.00.
No U.S. silver dollars are dated 1830 because none were made. Look at the coin for a .999 fine, one ounce marking. It may be whats called a "Silver Round" that's an ounce of silver made to resemble a coin. The value would be just for the silver.
No U.S. silver dollars have an Indian Head design, so if you have one it's not real. A genuine silver dollar coin dated 1851 would be a Seated Liberty coin. I have seen many 'fantasy' silver rounds with the Indian Head design with different dates, but they all have the 1oz .999 fine silver markings somewhere on the coin.
US silver coins were made from coin silver (.900 fine), not sterling silver (.925 fine). Please see the Related Question for more information.

512.00 is the spot price on the current market for 1 pound troy ounce fine silver morgan dollar proff dated 1878 but my advice is find a coin dealer or even better a private coin collector and your coin would be worth closer to 750.00

Too general a question.
the silver content in the coin is equal to or greater than999 fine silver
....Its a 1 ounce bullion coin/round. These are privately minted rounds produced as an easy way to invest in silver. They are usually not dated because they are not numismatic products and aren't collected as a coin is. Rather they are just worth their intrinsic silver value. Today they are worth about $30, but it depends on silver spot price.
an auction, coin dealer or a jewerly store.
4-23-11>> The only US coin dated 2003 with the Walking Liberty design is a Silver Eagle Bullion coin. The value of the coin is tied to the spot price of silver at time of sale, today it's $46.61 per ounce.
If it has .999 Fine silver on it, it's a privately made "silver round" not a coin. The value would be for the silver by weight.
903 fine silver (90.3% silver, 9.7% copper).
