If you notice other things not working, such as heat/air blower, windshield wipers, and of course, no headlights, but parking lights / tail lights still work, it is probably the electronic ignition switch located inside your steering column. The part is cheap, but the labor is more expensive. Probably a $125 fix at a local trusted foreign car mechanic.
Answersometimes with this problem the emergencey brake light signal is on in the instsrument cluster. If you tick back the ignition until you hear a click and the car is still running it may allow a connection in your ignition swith and allow your instruments to function again, And you can save yourself a $125 bucksHeadlight dimmer switch is defective
The handbrake light is also the 'low fluid' warning light. It is connected to the handbrake as that ensures that it is checked every time you use the handbrake. If it remains on all the time, then check the brake fluid and top up if required. If the fluid is ok then it is probably the switch on the lever and is adjustable.
Have you checked the handbrake or the engine temp.
faulty switch
You didn't mention if you checked/tested the low beam headlamps or not.
Low alternator output or weak ground connection. Have the alternator checked.
Have you checked the fuses?
If the headlights are halogen, these tend to be sensitive to voltage spikes. Before replacing the headlights, have the electrical system checked for faulty voltage regulation.
in 1986 the headlights weren't fused the likely suspect would be the dimmer switch if it was located on the floor.
have you checked your wires
have the alternator checked. u are drawing to much current when using lights, is usually a good indication that alternator is about to fail its not the altinater its new
check the connections to the headlights and u might need to take your heater core out and get that checked out. or your belt may be bad or broken.
