Your 71 vw bug starts bug doesnt stay idle and stalls why is that?

The 71 VW bug had an electric idle solenoid on the side of the carburetor which picked up its current from the + side of the ignition coil. First check that the wire is good and that it has 12 volts of current. Next you can touch the end of the wire to the post on the idle solenoid and listen for a click. If there is no click replace the solenoid. IF it clicks then the port may be stopped up in carburetor . You can gently use a air hose and blow out the port or disassemble the carburetor and do a complete overhaul. If the problem persist after these repairs put in a new electric idle solenoid. You also need to check the spray jet in the throat of the carburetor to insure it is clean and not stopped up.

Idle control solonoid. the vacuum line has probably blown a hose. most likely just needs to be re-connected. try a small nylon zip-tie if it wont stay by itself.

Check for a vacuum leak somewhere. It might just be a cracked rubber vacuum line. Try short sprays of starting fluid at or near a suspected vacuum leak. You'll hear the engine idle speed change immediately if you find a leak.

If once it stalls can you restart it? If not then see if the gas is missing or the spark has stopped. If you can restart it immediately then check the fuel pressures. Could be a low pressure from the puel pump or a clogged filter. As you run the car it cant feed enought to keep it going. But when starting the system has already built to pressure and filled the manifold. If this doesnt help try repeating the question with some points filled in. Thanks Jonathon
