I have a 2001 Saturn SC2 and we've spent a lot of time diagnosing transmission problems with it. These cars are known to have a problem with their differential pins coming lose and wearing a hole in the bell housing of the transmission.
That happened to mine, causing the fluid to leak out. Once the fluid is too low, you will encounter problems while shifting. For my car, the first thing to start giving me trouble was reverse. Sometimes I would have to feather the gas until it engaged or put my foot on the brake and gas at the same time until it engaged. If the fluid is really low, you may not be able to use reverse at all.
Check your Transmission Fluid. If it is low, try adding some more. This might make your car driveable again but likely indicates that you will need to have your transmission repaired as soon as you can afford to. In the meantime you might be able to drive it for a little bit longer by adding fluid as needed.
