The thermocouple is bad. The thermocouple is the small metal tube that sits in the pilot light flame and runs to the control valve. The thermocouple generates a very small electrical current that keeps the gas valve open. They go bad regularly.

**** I would have to say to check to make sure the valve is not in the "Pilot" position. If it is then turn it to the "On' position. If it still isn't working then you may have a bad Gas Control Valve. If the thermocouple was bad the pilot light would not stay lit. If the pilot light stay lit, it is doing what it is supossed to do.

If a pilot light goes out in a gas water heater does the gas keep running?

No because water heaters have a safety valves and when the pilot light goes out the safety valve shuts off the gas

Do electric water heaters have pilot lights?

No, electric water heaters do not need a pilot light. The heating element is heated by an electric current (similar to the 'eye' on an electric stove or the heaters in a toaster). When the circuit is completed, electric current flows through the element, and it gets hot, and when the electricity is turned off, the element starts cooling. In a gas water heater, the pilot light is a flame, which is always burning. When it's time to heat up the water, the main gas valve is opened, and the pilot light ignites the gas, so that the main burner heats up.

When the pilot light cut off from the water heater for 2 days do you have to run water for it to reheat?

If the pilot light is on, the heater should come on by itself. If the pilot light is off then it has to be lit. If it will not stay on, the thermocouple is bad.

Hot water heater pilot light works heater wont light?

Have you turned the control from Pilot to On? Have you increased the temperature setting?

What The Pilot ignites?

The pilot light is a small flame which stays on all the time (as in older water heaters for example). When the water temperature drops below the thermostat setting, the main heating gas is turned on and the pilot light ignites it. There are many other uses for pilot lights. To conserve gas, modern water heaters generate a spark to light the gas.

Does the water heater still fill with water when the pilot light is off?

Yes

What is a orifice on water heater?

Gas water heater has an orifice for main burner and for pilot light, if not electronic ignition.

When the pilot light is off does the water heater still fill up?

The water continues to run into and out of the water heater. There is just no flame to heat it up.

Do gas water heaters drip water after you lite the pilot light?

Yes, gas water heaters often drip after they are put into service after a prolonged shut-down, but it is not because of the pilot light. When the main burner ignites below a tank of cold water, the moisture contained in the gas flame will condense on the outside of the tank bottom and the flue that passes through the center of the tank. Once the water is hot, the water heater should stop dripping and the moisture below the water heater should evaporate. Continued dripping may indicate a leak and the water heater may need to be repaired or more likely replaced if it is older--more than five to seven years old.

How much will it cost to fix the pilot light on a gas water heater?

small amount
