Yes, I'm tightening up my tummy right now, sitting here writing to you by contracting the ab muscles for five seconds. There! I just did a sit-up! Now, to tighten up your tushie! Is fitness for everyone?
Absolutely. Fitness is for everyone. Everybody can improve. It doesn't matter how old you are or how out of shape, your body can get healthier, that's the beauty of the human body, if you just try.
In watching your DVDs it is easy to be motivated by your enthusiasm--it's infectious! Were you always this passionate about fitness? How did you know that you wanted to have a career within the fitness industry?
I've always been somewhat of a cheerleader and started gymnastics at a very early age. So my foundation for health and fitness started young. I practiced as a teenager 3-5 hours a day in gymnastics. After earning a scholarship to college, I went to get my degree specializing in Exercise Physiology. Then I met Jack LaLanne and he gave me my first start on TV in the 80s.
When Kelly and Katie were younger, how did you teach them the value of an active lifestyle?
My husband and I were both college athletes, so it was only natural that they were into sports and fitness. They both excelled in Lacrosse and each got a scholarship to college to play Lacrosse. It's so important for girls to have a good foundation of fitness when they're young to help improve their self-esteem and self-worth. And now I'm so proud of both my girls. And what's really fun is that my youngest daughter, Katie, is following in my footsteps. We even do a Mother/Daughter dance workout in my 10-Week Plan. Everyone is loving it!
How did having your daughters--Kelly and Katie--change your workout routine? Do you have any fitness tips for mothers?
Convenience is the key. As a mom, I know how hard it can be to make time for yourself. Having it in your own home is the best. There are no excuses. My workouts are available on any screen--iPad, iPhone, your computer, even on your SmartTV. Moms can take me anywhere to get in a good workout.
