A heat exchanger is a piece of industrial equipment that transfers heat from one surface to another. It is used as a safety device that is meant to keep equipment from overheating too quickly. Heat exchangers are used in many types of machinery, including refrigeration units and natural gas processors.

What a Heat Exchanger Does

The simple process of transferring heat from one surface to another is achieved through different heat exchanger methods. In general, a heat exchanger uses water or air to cool an engine. An automotive radiator works by exchanging the heat from engine fluids to the cooler air that rushes through the engine compartment when the car is in operation. Some heat exchangers absorb the heat through conductive materials and expel it into the outside air, which cools the interior of the engine. Heat transfer can be accomplished several different ways, but each method is designed to regulate the temperature of the engine.

Different Types of Heat Exchangers

There are two main types of heat exchangers. A parallel flow heat exchanger is designed so that the fluids enter the same end of the exchanger, and exit through the opposite end. A counter flow heat exchanger is a more efficient design that draws the hot and cool fluids through opposite ends of the chamber. Counter flow heat exchange systems cool the fluids far more quickly than parallel flow exchangers, though there are industrial situations that require the use of parallel flow exchangers because of the way the machine operates.

Proper Heat Exchanger Maintenance

It is possible for debris and particles to build up within a heat exchanger over time. A mesh cover can be installed over one end of the exchanger to trap the debris, and that mesh will need to be cleaned regularly. As debris builds up, the efficiency of the heat exchanger will be compromised because less fluid will be able to move through the unit. Cleansers can be flushed through heat exchangers periodically to help reduce the build up of debris along the sides of the pipes. Heat exchangers should be pulled apart and cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis so that they continue to protect your machinery.

What is a gas furnace heat exchanger?

The heat exchanger is the metal wall or tubing that is heated up when the burners are ignited. The inside of the heat exchanger allows the toxic flue gases produced from the burners to exhaust out through the furnace flue. The outside of the heat exchanger is where the cold air passes over, becomes warmed, and is blown throughout the ductwork of the home. The heat exchanger is the only wall separating the toxic flue gases from the supply air. If a crack develops in the heat exchanger, there is a potential for carbon monoxide gas to leak over to the supply side and be blown throughout your rooms. Carbon monoxide gas is odorless. The human senses will not detect its presence. Ron Ferrara- DHR Mechanical Services, Inc.

What is the purpose of floating head in heat exchanger?

allow for tube expansion

How hot does a gas fired heat exchanger get?

There are specific values for heat rise across a furnace heat exchanger given in all installation/operation manuals for all furnaces. As long as these limits are adhered to by the installer the heat exchanger will not overheat. I know this does not answer the question but there is no one blanket answer for all furnaces. Basically the more airflow through the furnace, the lower the HX temp and to determine when the airflow is correct a heat rise test is done and the airflow is set to the mid point of that specification.

Why you we use log mean temperature difference formula?

The use of the LMTD arises straightforwardly from the analysis of a heat exchanger with constant flow rate and fluid thermal properties. It is a simple method to approximated the temperature diving force in a heat exchanger. The LMTD is a logarithmic average of the temperature difference between the hot and cold streams at each end of the exchanger. The larger the LMTD, the more heat is transferred.

What is different between cooler and heat exchanger?

Both the cooler and heat exchanger perform the same function as they remove heat from the engine. Two popular types of coolers are air-to-air inter-coolers that allow air to flow over fins and air-to-water models. The heat exchanger is often mounted in front of the radiator and uses airflow to reduce water temperature.

Is a heat pump and heat exchanger the same thing?

No they are not. In fact a heat pump contains within it a heat exchanger/coil. A heat pump is reverse refrigeration. A heat exchange, exchanges heart from a heat source to a conditioned space (the area you want heated). While a heat pump uses a heat exchanger to supply heat to the conditioned space. Reverse refrigeration uses the air conditioner in reverse(you know how heat comes if the back of yhe air conditioner, well when it's in reverse that heat is used to heat a home in winter months.
