Pajamas, refers to a lightly-fitting outfit worn for sleeping. The word is Hindustani, coming from the Persian payjama, meaning “leg garment.” Pajamas emerged as one of the more pleasant side-effects of British Imperialism: originally it was loose trousers, secured at the waist and worn commonly in India, which returning British brought to Europe. Colloquially, pajamas are PJs or jim-jams. Selecting the right pajamas is a bigger task for women, typically, than it is for men. • The earliest known reference to pajamas in the west was by Francis Pyard, a French traveler held captive in Goa from 1608-09. He said Portuguese people there wore cotton pajamas to bed.

• Pajamas acquired popularity in the U.S. in the 1920s, with women also using them for lounging. As early as 1918, the New York Times wrote of pajamas being in “good demand,” particularly in the West and Midwest.

• Silk pajamas will become softer and more comfortable over time, while other fabrics will wear thin and become brittle. Other fabrics popular with women are satin, chiffon and rayon.

• Pajamas are so simple, it may be worth taking your sewing machine out and making your own for a fraction of the cost of buying them. A husband may not want to wear such things, but children will be impressed, especially if you use a picture of a favorite cartoon character or super hero.
