LOW CARB DIET FOODS

So, what can you eat you a low carb diet?

Well, that depends on whether you want an ordinary low carb diet, or a 100% wholly natural low carb diet (which, by chance, happens to be the lowest low carbohydrate diet as well as the healthiest low carb diet).

Therefore, in order to set out your choices, here on this page are examples of

  • low carb foods,
  • the very best low carb diet foods,
  • the worst, potentially most hazardous to health, carbohydrate foods,
  • and then, at the bottom of this page, there are page links to lists of each type of these carbohydrate groups, plus low carbohydrate counting charts, and additional information about how to use low carb foods and diets to achieve your goal for weight loss, or weight loss and optimum health, or weight maintenance once you have achieved your target weight.

OVERVIEW

The best examples of low carb diet foods are specific fat burning proteins! To burn more body fat, use low carb specific fat burning proteins to take full advantage of the wonderful fat burning "thermic effect" of these nutritious foods. If you are unsure what these foods are, at the bottom of this answer you will find a page link leading to a full list and more detailed information about the thermic effect of food.

The foods that are NOT examples of low carb diet foods are refined processed carbohydrates! They are an example of the worst kind of carbohydrate foods. Moreover, they can be a danger to health.
In fact, over-consumption of refined processed carbohydrate is a major cause of Heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain, obesity, insulin resistance, borderline and type 2 Diabetes, and numerous diet related diseases and conditions. You will find a page link leading to a full list, at the bottom of this answer.

Replace refined processed carbohydrates with more of the specific fat burning proteins.

In relation to the fat burning "thermic effect" of food, refined processed carbohydrates have a 3% rate, which means that it requires only about 3 calories for your body to use or burn 100 calories.

Whereas, specific fat burning proteins, have up to a whopping 30% rate because your body must work harder to process these proteins than to process carbohydrates. Drinking plenty of water helps your body do this. Individual needs vary, I recommend starting with 3 quarts of water daily (unless you have any known medical condition that would preclude drinking this amount of fluid).

Eating as outlined above will significantly rev up your metabolism and curb foods cravings. Of course, in relation to the information given earlier in this answer, if you want to lose body fat, or if you aim for optimum health, you must avoid refined processed carbohydrates (apart from an occasional treat).

Many overweight people, and many normal weight people, are addicted to refined processed carbohydrates. In terms of health, as deliciously additive as these foods are, they are the worst kind of carbohydrate foods.

Feeding frequency is also important for weight loss. To obtain maximum results, eat a small meal about every three waking hours (5 or 6 small feedings per day). Each of those meals should contain about 20 grams of one of the specific fat burning proteins for a male and about 15 grams for a female. You will not be eating more food; you will simply be spreading it throughout the day. At the bottom of this page, you will find a page link leading to an eating plan that explains more about the feeding frequency.

Unless you are vegetarian, your protein should come from unprocessed natural sources such as (organic when possible) meats, eggs, and line caught (not farmed) fish. For fat loss, it is best to avoid dairy products such as milk or cheese because many people are lactose intolerant without being aware of it.

Low carb does not have to be no carb. The usual low carbohydrate range is 20 - 50 grams per day. Experiment and decide how strict you need to be. It varies from person to person.

For example, nowadays, many people have a degree of insulin resistance, often without being aware of it. In which case they will find it hard to lose weight and they will gain weight very easily. If this sounds like you, you will do better starting at the bottom end of the carbohydrates per day range. Degrees of insulin resistance vary from mild to intense. The way to deal with it is to restrict your carbohydrate consumption and count carbohydrates.

(In fact, exercising and counting carbohydrates can reverse some cases of severe insulin resistance such as type 2 diabetes.)

Unlike proteins and fats, carbohydrates are not essential for health or to sustain life.In other words, you would become unwell and die if you ate a no protein or a no fat diet (this is why very low fat diets can be a hazard to health).

However, there is no minimum daily requirement for carbohydrate because it is not essential to health or to sustain life. If you had to, just as the Inuit (Eskimo) did, you could be healthy if you ate no carbohydrate whatsoever (if you had to).

Nonetheless, carbs from vegetables and fruit do contain beneficial phytonutrients and fiber so eating some if fine, but since modern fruits and fruit juices (even natural fruit juices) are high in carbs and you can get the phytonutrients and fiber from vegetables, it is best to avoid fruit for the duration of your low carb diet. If you do eat fruit on your low carb diet, eat only a tiny portion of low carb fruit such as berries. Bear in mind that fruit is high in natural sugars.

At the bottom of this answer, are Low Carbohydrate Vegetable and Fruit Charts to use as daily guides for weight loss, or weight maintenance once you have reached your target weight

So, in relation to low carb diet foods, get your daily carbohydrates from natural sources such as plenty of non-starchy leafy green vegetables and low carbohydrate leafy salads, without dressings. Remember, when digested, all carbohydrates are sugars. Therefore, think of eating carbohydrate as eating sugar and think of eating refined processed carbohydrate as eating concentrated sugar.

When its comes to diets focusing on low to no carbohydrates, there are specific foods that should be essential in all meals eaten throughout the day. Foods containing medium to high amounts of protein, such as pork, fish and eggs, should be included in all main meals eaten on a daily basis. Fruits and vegetables should also be a staple with all meals and can be prepared in a wide variety of ways to bring about different amounts of flavor and spontaneity to your diet. For all other snacks and "mini" meals throughout the day, dairy products, such as cheese slices or yogurts, as well as a variety of nuts should be consumed to satisfy your appetite.
