People without unlimited texting on a cell plan often feel under pressure of the message limits when trying to keep up with and text those people with unlimited messaging. Sending SMS using Gmail

The first method uses the Gmail email account, but you can use any email account to do this. First, you need to know your contact's phone number and what service provider is used. Once you know this, it is simple. Almost all cell phone carriers offer a free email to SMS gateway. All you do is send an email as you normally would to a pre-set email address. For example, to send an SMS to a friend using AT&T, you simply send an email to [10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net. For a friend using Verizon, you send the email to [10-digit phone number]@vtext.com. All major cell phone carriers have these email to SMS gateways.

Sending SMS via Gmail's Gchat service is just as simple. First, you must enable SMS in your Google Chat Lab. Then, enter your contact's name in the "search or invite friends" box, and select "send SMS," which appears underneath your contact's name. In the dialogue box, enter your friend's phone number in the "send SMS messages to this number" field, and click "save." Then, enter your message and hit enter as you would a regular instant message. This should send the message as an SMS to your friend's phone.

Sending a SMS is easy if you follow one of the two methods mentioned here. All you need is your friend's phone number (and their provider if you use the first method). Creating a Google account if you do not already have one only takes a few minutes. After that, you are free to text to your heart's content - for free.
