A Travel Counsellor is a professional who sells and advises the public about travel products and services. In the United States, the term "travel agent' tends to be used more than Travel Counsellor. The idea of an 'agent' arose due to the fact that retail travel professionals sell the products of suppliers, such as tour operators, cruises, car rentals, airlines, Travel Insurance and more. So, in a sense, the travel professional is acting as an 'agent' to represent those products to the consumer. In Canada, the term 'travel counsellor" is used, with the idea that a travel professional 'counsels' the client about all the options available to them, in order to fulfill their travel needs. Most travel counsellors have a computer on their desk, called a GDS (Global Distribution System), in which thousands of supplier products are listed. Therefore a client with a particular need can be 'counselled' about which options work best for their travel plans. When a consumer visits a travel internet site on their own, they may only see those products that the site chooses to list. The consumer often has to make a decision based on the narrow choices presented to him/her, rather than all the options that are actually available to that traveller. This is why the trend these days is to research on the internet, but then go to a travel professional to book travel services. This especially holds true in a recession-economy where travellers want the best value for their dollar and prefer not to spend hours and hours trying to find that value. Statistically, travel counsellors save consumers money, time and time again, when compared with internet bookings. The highest level of travel counselling is reflected by the CTC (Certified Travel Counsellor) designation. This is a voluntary program based on an evaluation by the industry's educational association, on nationally recognized skills. In the US, The Travel Institute (www.ThetravelInstitute.com)awards te CTC and other professional designations. In Canada the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors (www.citc.ca)manages the CTC program.

Becoming a Travel Counselor?

A career as a travel counselor is an ideal choice for someone who enjoys traveling, and also enjoys planning the vacations of others. As is suggested by the job’s title, those employed in this field offer advice and information related to the travel industry to a variety of clients. A travel counselor helps people to decide where to go on vacation, when to go, and how to get there. Additionally, travel counselors may assist people who travel for business purposes. Either way, travel counselors need to be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about geography and the travel industry. Travel counselors frequently help their clients over the telephone, or via email, although face-to-face meetings still occur occasionally. As a result, travel counselors should have excellent written and spoken communication skills and have a pleasant demeanor on the telephone. An aptitude for details, patience, and sales ability are also important qualities for anyone considering entering this field. Travel counselors may be employed by a travel agency or work independently out of their home. Full and part time positions are available, and salaries will vary depending upon the size and location of the agency, as well as whether or not the counselor operates independently. Travel counselors are sometimes compensated with a salary, commissions, or sometimes both. In addition, travel counselors often get to travel at a discounted rate as airlines, hotels and other travel companies will offer counselors incentives to try out their services in return for recommending them to their clients. The compensation travel counselors will receive varies depending upon their location, sales ability, experience, whether they work full or part time, and other factors. Most experienced counselors can earn anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 per year. Starting salaries for a new travel counselor can be approximately $18,000, although some positions will offer more. There is no strictly required educational program for becoming a travel counselor; however, most agencies prefer to hire counselors who have at least attended a program at a vocational school. There are a few four year universities which offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Travel and Tourism, and these are an excellent option for the individual who wants to advance quickly.
