They aren't the best.

As far as the transmissions in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and having a programmer, there's a good chance your transmission won't last. I've seen it several times- my boyfriend is on his 2nd transmission and will soon need another rebuild. They say those transmissions are only built to withstand stock power but...

I have an 2006 Dodge 3/4 with the Cummins and it's STOCK with 93,000 miles. It doesn't always shift when it should and sometimes doesn't shift at all. The Transmission Fluid isn't the red color it's supposed to be so, I'll be dumping money into it soon.

As far as light duty (Class 1 - 4) trucks go, just General Motors. Ford uses their own transmissions, and Dodge uses the Aisin transmission. If you look into medium- and heavy duty trucks, several manufacturers have the Allison automatic transmissions as an option (for example, you can get them with the Ford F650 and F750), but these are quite different from the transmissions used in GM light duty pickups.
