I got the plastic housing off of the steering column and I'm stuck too! From the pictures I saw of the new ignition switch, (where the key goes?), it seems like the entire assembly must split in half... there is what looks like a tap on the right side of the thing that is whispering to me... it say it wants me to hit it with a hammer and then MASH myself in the head for buying a Volkswagon.... open for suggestions... I'm in the middle of this operation now. I found some pictures of performing this operation on a Vanagon and from what I can see from my Jetta, they are very similar. The steering wheel must be removed, then the ring that the turn signal/cruise control is connected to. Then there is a hex nut on the underside that must be removed along with a whole bunch of electrical connectors. Once that is done, the whole ignition key assembly is supposed to come off. I haven't gotten this far, so this is all assumptions now. I do know that there is a single screw that must then be undone now that you can access it. This screw holds the electrical switch onto the back of the key cylinder.
