Refer to Draining and Filling Cool Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Remove the engine lifting device. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Liftinging System in Engine Cooling. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet in Engine Cooling. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Engine Cooling. Disconnect the A/C compressor from the engine. Secure the compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning. Remove the starter motor wiring harness. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (3800 L36 and L67) in Starting and Charging. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle. In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable. Disconnect the throttle and cruise control cables from the linkage. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Powertrain Management. Remove the wiring harness from the top of the engine. Important: Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure in Powertrain Management. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rail. Lay the fuel lines aside. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Filter to Engine) in Powertrain Management. Disconnect the fuel vapor line Remove the vacuum booster hose from the engine. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes. Disconnect the AC vacuum hose from the engine. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning. Remove the engine mount struts from the engine mount strut brackets. Remove the Power Steering pump from the engine. Lay the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (3800 L36 and L67) in Starting and Charging. Remove the engine flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Transmission and Drivetrain. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to AT Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain. Disconnect the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Powertrain Management. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1). Lower the vehicle. Install the engine lifting device

  1. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).

  4. Install the engine to the engine stand.

  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
  8. Remove the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement
  2. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
  3. Install the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Powertrain Management.
  4. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Starting and Charging.
  5. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.
  6. Install the engine to the vehicle. Notice:Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions
  1. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
    • Tighten the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
  1. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Powertrain Management.
  2. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to AT Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
  3. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
  4. Install the engine flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Align the scribe marks. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Transmission and Drivetrain.
  5. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (3800 L36 and L67) in Starting and Charging.
  6. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
  9. Install the engine mount struts to the engine mount struts brackets.
  10. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
  11. Install the AC vacuum hose to the engine.
