Remove cotter pin from the top of the castle nut. Loosen castle nut to the top of the threads.

Loosen clamp around the retainer and using a small chisel and hammer gently loosen retainer without damaging it. This will help you unscrew it when the time comes.

Using the large pickle fork (available at most automotive stores for approx $10) and a hammer, separate joint from the pitman arm. Once separated, remove the castle nut and place shaft on a block to support it.

Use a pipe wrench to unscrew the other end.

To replace, be sure to use never sieze on all threads and cotter pin.

HINT: put the grease fitting on AFTER the new drag link is installed so it doesn't get in your way or break off while you are screwing it back in.

To change the idler arm and drag link on a 1992 GMC Typhoon, begin by safely lifting and securing the vehicle. Remove the drag link by disconnecting the nuts at both ends, then take off the idler arm by unbolting it from the frame and the drag link. How can you tell if you need to replace a drag link?

Have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth with the weight of the vehicle still on the front wheels. Do not jack up the vehicle to perform this test. Look at the drag link joints, there should be NO play up and down or sideways in the joints. If you are not sure, a garage can diagnose this quickly at a low or no cost.

How does the drag link work?

A drag link is a crucial component in a vehicle's steering system, connecting the steering gear or box to the steering arm on the wheels. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the motion is transmitted through the steering gear to the drag link, which then pivots and moves the steering arm. This action causes the wheels to turn in the desired direction, allowing for controlled steering. The drag link helps maintain proper alignment and ensures responsive handling.

What does a drag link do?

A drag link converts rotary motion from a crank to a second crank or link in a different plane or axis. The term is commonly used in automotive technology for the link in a four bar steering linkage that converts rotation of a steering arm to a center link and eventually to tie rod links which pivot the wheels to be steered. A drag link is used when the steering arm operates in a plane above the other links. The drag link converts the sweeping arc of the steering arm to linear motion in the plane of the other steering links. An alternate steering mechanism is a rack and pinion, a three bar linkage that eliminates the drag link by directly moving the center link. The length of a drag link can affect the geometry and thus the steering ratio. Severe wear of this part can affect the wheel alignment such as Toe-in or Toe-out settings. This can drastically affect the handling and stability of the vehicle at speed.
