Loud knocking in an engine is usually associated with a rod bearing. Rods connect the crankshaft to the pistons. Have it repaired right away because when a rod goes out it can go through the side of the engine block.

To fix a knocking engine noise in a 1989 Nissan 240SX, start by checking the engine oil level and condition, as low or dirty oil can cause knocking. If the oil is fine, inspect the engine for loose components, such as heat shields or exhaust parts. A more serious issue could involve worn bearings or a damaged piston, so consider performing a compression test or a rod knock diagnosis. If the problem persists, it may be best to consult a mechanic for a thorough inspection and possible repairs.

not even close youde have to do some major modifications to the motor and lighten up the chassis first
== == I do believe if you hear a knocking noise that your crank shaft could be failing. Which means you will need a new engine. Have it checked out. Replace the harmonic balancer they will make a bad knocking noise. When you start it and the oil light goes out and it knocks, this is what is wrong with it.
i asked this question the tempture gage shows it is over heating but the engine is cold to touch
low break fluid?
Probably fried one of your pistons. Don't even worry about the noise. Just get a reman engine. You need one.
Assuming the engine is not knocking, indicating a serious mechanical problem, its most likely the oil pressure sender.
There were only 2 engines available in the '89 Cavalier. If it's a 4cylinder, it's a 2.0liter If it's the V-6, then its a 2.8liter. There also should be a sticker on the radiator core support. Also the 2.8 has it stamped on the plenum chamber, top of the motor.
The oil should be pumped into the oil journals in a second or two. If you still have rod knocking, you still have problems. It could be piston slap or any of a number of problems, but rod knocking is most common. Have you checked your oil pressure? If oil pressure is up when the engine is running and the knocking continues, it's not a crankshaft problem.
