More detail is needed here, does it make a clicking noise, is there any feeling at all when turning key, do other electrical items work, etc.

Common reasons for a 1996 Ford Taurus engine that turns over won't start are a faulty compressor or ignition. The engine may not be able to compress the air/gas mixture well enough for it to burn when the spark fires or the ignition may be unable to produce the spark required to start the combustion process.

Fix the problem. The code will disappear after 50 starts
You either have to turn the ignition switch back or forward a certain # of times! I am having this problem after changing the battery! The module reset it's self and I can't remember if it's forward or back and of course the # of times!!!!!
Check the rod than runs from ignition down steering column to actual switch at bottom
I had this exact problem on my 1996 Taurus. The solution in my case was to replace the transmission range sensor. I replaced it myself. It was easy to change. I can't say if that is what is wrong with your Taurus, but it was what was wrong with mine. Good Luck! This was also the problem with my '96 Taurus... part was also refferd to a Nuetral Safty Switch"
The 1996 Ford Taurus sedan is approximately ( 197.5 inches long )
If you have lost your key, you have to get a new ignition for the car. There is no way they can ujust give you one or make one without a copy!
how do I replace a parking lamp (left) on a 1996 Ford Taurus
I had the same problem on my 1996 Pontiac firebird, they told me that my ignition cylinder had went out. Maybe you could ask about that, I don't know what would cause that to go out though? I had a similar problem 1998 Mystique LS. It was a burnt out relay. Also the ignition switch (what the key turns on...I'm not a mechanic I think that is what it was called) was worn and I had to replace switch.
