To hook up a code reader to a 2000 Volvo, locate the OBD-II diagnostic port, which is typically found under the dashboard near the driver's side, just above the brake pedal. Plug the code reader's connector into this port. Once connected, turn on the vehicle's ignition (without starting the engine) to power the code reader, allowing it to communicate with the car's onboard computer. Follow the reader's instructions to retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes.
