An AC compressor will only engage when the "low side" refrigerant pressure sensor detect that it is above a specific PSI level. A faulty sensor or more likely a low refrigerant pressure will prevent the compressor clutch from engaging.
There are quite a few other conditions that can result in an inoperable compressor as well:
Faulty clutch
Faulty relay
Blown fuse
bad connector
Damaged wire
Faulty controls on the dashboard...
To properly diagnose the problem will require the assistance of someone who can investigate the AC system.

Bad clutch on compressor, unplug the wires from the AC compressor, replace fuse if doesnt blow fuse its in compressor, if blows then gounded wire
The passenger side kick panel is the panel on the passenger's right side that covers the "wall" under the glove box and just forward of the door.
The AC compressor on most SL vehicles is on the passenger side, just in front of the engine. Both the high and low ports are connected to the aluminum tubes that connect to the compressor.
