broken timing belt or chain....
The distributor doesn't turn, the rotor inside turns clockwise.
counterclockwise
Rotor Under Cap Spins: Clockwise
The distributor rotor is turned by the camshaft of the engine. As the camshaft rotates, it drives the distributor shaft, which in turn causes the rotor to spin. This rotation is essential for directing the electrical spark to the correct cylinder at the right time during the ignition cycle.
unscrew the distributor pull it out about half way with the distributor cap off and turn the rotor clock wise to disired position
Turn it to the opposite direction that the rotor rotates.
Take the distributor cap off an crank the engine or turn the engine by hand clockwise and note the direction of the distributor rotor.
timing belt broken...replacement $800 in shop
Bad distributor or rotor or bad spark plug wires would be my first culprits.
The distributor rotates CLOCKWISE
Distributor and rotor.Distributor and rotor.
To advance ignition timing, loosen the distributor clamp and in very small increments turn the distributor body in the OPPOSITE direction of the rotor's normal rotation. If you don't know which way the rotor turns, you can find out easily by removing the distributor cap and having a helper turn the engine over with the ignition key switch. To advance the timing turn the distributor counter clockwise.
