Thirteen.
There were none... Actually, There were. Peyton Randolph of Virginia, Henry Middleton, John Hancock, Henry Laurens, John Jay, Samuel Huntington, Thomas McKean, John Hanson, Elias Boudinot, Thomas Miffin, Richard Henry Lee, Nathanial Gorham, Arthur St.Clair, Cyrus Griffin. These are all Forgotten Presidents and I'm not sure if these guys were NON elected but they were still presidents before George.
All but 4 of the 43 Presidents held an elected office before they were President. Those that did not were Taylor, Grant, Hoover and Eisenhower. George Washington did not serve any elected office under the US Constitution, but he was elected to serveral positions in the colonial government. Herbert Hoover was Secretary of Commerce which is a national office, but is not elected.
George Washington. During Washington's two terms the Federalist and Republican (not the current Republican) parties were formed. John Adams was the first (and only) Federalist President, and Jefferson was the first Republican President.
President Vincent
John Tyler. He started out as a Whig, but was kicked out of the party when he vetoed the banking bill. The description also applied to Andrew Johnson, who was only a Republican for 4 years when he was vice-president and president, but was a Democrat before and after.
There weren't any presidents before Washington.
All the others predate the ratification and adaptation of the U.S. Constitution.
