Thus, he would undoubtedly have been considered a Patriot by the colonists who were rebelling against English rule.

The Continental Army lacked mainly discipline, training, man, and firepower during the beginning years of the Revolution. They also lacked supplies, especially during the winter in Valley Forge. After training was given by Barron Von Steuban, the discipline did improve.

Because they were seen as enemies to the new republic. Would you give your enemy rewards or try to take everthing they have? Also, loyalist anyone who was loyal to the crown at the time was seen as an enemy of the patriots and the patriots had won the Revolutionary War.
