What factors lead to the British defeat at Yorktown?

(Hope you know your American Revolution!) Gen. Washington made plans to attack the British at Yorktown, V.A., rather than in New York City the Patriots hoped for help from the French in July 1780, French warships appeared off Newport, R.I.; the ships carried soldiers and Comte de Rochambeau, who commanded them; the British arrived soon afterward and trapped the French ships in autumn 1780, Washington camped north of New York, waiting for the second French fleet the French fleet didn't set sail until summer 1781 Washington followed reports of fighting in the south during 1780-81, knowing the Cornwallis's troops were camped in Yorktown and that Lafayette was keeping them on the Yorktown peninsula he also learned that Admiral François de Grasse, the French naval commander, was heading toward Chesapeake Bay instead of New York, and changed his plans Washington kept his new strategy secret, wanting to make Clinton think the Patriots still planned to attack the British in New York hopefully, this would keep Clinton from aiding Cornwallis meanwhile, Rochambeau marched from Newport to join Washington, and then both rushed south with their armies the secrecy was so strict that most soldiers didn't know where they were going the troops marched 200 miles in 15 days Clinton didn't detect the forces heading south toward Virginia, where the three American groups would meet at Yorktown the plan worked perfectly, as the British were thoroughly confused by the end of September, 14,000 American/French troops had trapped Cornwallis's 8,000 British/Hessian troops meanwhile, de Grasse's fleet kept Cornwallis from escaping by sea Clinton and his troops were still up in New York, and couldn't help Cornwallis at all on October 9, the Americans and the French began a huge bombardment British supplies ran low, and many soldiers were wounded or sick Alexander Hamilton, Washington's aide, led an attack that captured key British defenses on October 14 Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781 a few more battles continued after the Battle of Yorktown the British knew, however, that the war was too costly to continue both sides sent delegates to Paris to work out a treaty Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay were the Americans on hand the final Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3, 1783

When did James Monroe cross the Delaware River with George Washington?

I believe MJames Monroe crossed the Delaware River earlier the George Washington and at a different place entirely, Corryell's Ferry now New Hope PA. as per the web site www.CortyellsFerryMiltia.com ;The events during the winter of 1776 and the American Revolution and Coryell's Ferry (now New Hope) are astounding. Pre-eminent of those events was the vital mission carried out by Lt. James Monroe and Captain William Washington (George's third cousin). General George Washington (our first president) asked for volunteer's to cross the Delaware River at dusk. The crossing had to be far enough up river so as not to alert the British forces that an attack was coming. This mission was to cut off all communications between the British stationed at Princeton and the Hessian mercenaries billeted in the old French and Indian War Barracks in Trenton, N. J. Lt. Monroe had to cross several hours before the main body of of troops with General George Washington at McKonkey's Ferry (now Washington Crossing, Pa.) so that he could be in a place to be effective.Just at dusk, Captain William Washington and Lt. James Monroe (our fifth president) and 57 private soldiers crossed at Coryell's Ferry Pa into the Jersies. The troops went to their post at Princeton-Pennington Rd. and successfully completed their mission. A farm that was nearby was occupied by a Doctor Riker. Doctor Riker sensed that the cold soldiers huddled in that intersection were on a valuable and secret mission. Once the good doctor ascertained they were indeed Continental Soldiers, he offered to come along stating "that perhaps I may be able to help some poor fellow". Doctor Riker's words came true later the next morning when Captain Washington and Lt. Monroe marched on to Trenton, joined up with General Washington and as a special honor were charged to lead the attack on the Hessian Barracks. It was Doctor Riker's quick actions that stemmed the bleeding wounds of the heroes. The men were brought back to the Coryell House (now Havana's) where they recovered and went on to greater glory.

How did Washington plan to conquer the British at Yorktown?

Washington wanted to get the British out of New York City but the recently arrived French Commander, Comte de Rochambeau, had to get his fleet to the carribean by October so he convinced Washington that it would be easier for the French Fleet to assist in the attack further south where Cornwallis was in Yorktown with 9000 British soldiers, where he had fewer soldiers than the occupation of New York City. The plan was for the French Commander to defeat the British fleet at the battle of Chesapeake (which succeeded in early September) and thus blocked any escape by sea for Cornwallis. Washington sent the French General Lafayette to contain Cornwallis until he and his forces could arrive (which he did). So the combined attack at Yorktown by land and by sea left no choice for Cornwallis but to surrender.
